The Atlantis Special Economic Zone (ASEZ) is delighted to announce the appointment of Mr. Saliem Fakir as the new Board Chairperson, effective from 15th January 2024. Mr. Fakir, a globally recognized leader in sustainability, climate policy, and finance, brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to drive green transformation within the company.

ASEZ majority shareholder representative, the Western Cape Minister of Finance, Economic Opportunities and Tourism, Mireille Wenger, confirmed Mr. Fakir's appointment, stating, "I am excited about the fresh perspective and insights Mr. Fakir will continue to bring to the board and look forward to working together to navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead."

Alderman James Vos, speaking on behalf of the City of Cape Town's shareholding, expressed his support, saying, "Appointing Mr. Fakir as Chairperson will strengthen the direction and governance of the company, and we welcome his appointment."

Mr. Fakir, currently serving as the Executive Director of the African Climate Foundation, has an extensive background, having spent 11 years as the Head of the Policy & Futures Unit at World Wildlife Fund South Africa and holding key positions at Stellenbosch University and the World Conservation Union, South Africa.

In response to his appointment, Mr. Fakir shared his enthusiasm, "I am honoured to take on the role of Board Chairperson at the Atlantis SEZ. I look forward to collaborating with the board, management, and shareholders to further the company's commitment to sustainability and innovation."

This role will be passed on from Ms. Jo-Ann Johnston, Deputy Director General at the Western Cape Provincial Department of Economic Development and Tourism. Ms. Johnston played a key role in creating the Special Economic Zone, which she and her team successfully implemented through a committed inter-governmental partnership. Now that a strong foundation has been established, the business may go forward. Ms. Johnston will continue to serve on the board and assist Mr. Fakir in his new capacity.

2024 will be an amazing year full of opportunities and we look forward to reap the benefits of Mr. Fakir's experience and leadership abilities which will compliment an already capable and knowledgeable board. The appointment of Mr. Saliem Fakir is expected to bring a fresh perspective and enhance the company's strategic direction towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
